Karnivool

Ever heard of Birds of Tokyo? Remember ‘Lanterns‘? Well singer Kenney from Karnivool is also the singer of Birds of Tokyo. Yeah, I know, two totally different sounds.

Karnivool is an Australian progressive rock band from Perth, Australia. They formed in 1997 and began playing Nirvana songs and the rest is history.

If you’ve never heard them before, I would describe them as similar to progressive rock band ‘Tool‘. They have recently (and are currently) touring around Australia, doing festivals like ‘Unify Gathering’ with ‘In Hearts Wake’ and ‘Taking Back Sunday’.

To keep up with Karnivool, you can follow them on Facebook.

Dessa

Margaret Wander, or better known as ‘Dessa‘, is an American Hip Hop artist. She is a rapper, singer, spoken word artist, writer and former former record executive.

Her background as an author (writing a seventy page collection of fiction and poetry), gives her music a beautiful and poetic edge over many other artists. Plus you can’t go past her sick beats, great riffs and edgy melodies.

Although she’s an extremely small artist without recognition, her achievements include; playing Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, being published by the New York Times, Forbes and the Wall Street Journal.

John
Butler
Trio

For the people who do know Butler (folk/alternative rock artist), you know how awesome he is live and in studio. Great lyrics, amazing guitarist and overall a musical vibe that you can get behind. Although he is fairly well known, for how talented he is, he just isn’t well-known enough.

Something that also shines through in Butler’s music, is his passion for political activism. In a lot of his songs (such as ‘Revolution‘), you can find strong moral and political messages. He has supported many events and causes during his career, using his music as a tool for change. Do you still need a reason to listen to this guy?

Gin
Wigmore

Gin Wigmore is a singer and songwriter from New Zealand. She has that edgy ‘girlpower’ thing going on with with her music. But with her rock chick, raspy and unique voice and distorted guitar found on many of her songs such as ‘Kill of the Night‘, it’s easy for anyone to get right into her music.

This song was also featured on an Australian car advertisement (it may have been Jeep but don’t take my word for it), so if you’d heard it you may even already know it.

The
Preatures

The Preatures would have to be one of my female-fronted alternative rock bands. And they’re from Sydney – yewwww!

If you like Haim, you’d probably enjoy these guys. They have that retro 70s aesthetic that I can definitely get amongst, some great harmonies and funky bass and guitar. Can ‘It Get Better’?

Yes, yes it can. They’re great live, I saw them as the supporting act for Foo Fighters (who were also awesome but not at all underrated). Singer, Izzi Manfredi is an awesome singer. Energetic, great tone and energetic. Plus she featured on RockWiz that one time…
